Support

When Archbishop Purcell decided to build a shrine in honor of the Blessed Mother, he chose Mt. Adams because it was one of the highest points that overlooked downtown Cincinnati. Immaculata Church served the German speaking immigrants, and not long after, Holy Cross Church was built to serve the many Irish immigrants. For over a hundred years, the thriving family-oriented Mt. Adams neighborhood was self-sufficient and provided all the services that families needed. At one time there were five grocery stores, a dry goods store, and two fruit stores. There was also a bakery, a drycleaner, a shoemaker, a movie theatre, and its own bowling alley!

By 1970 the demographics of Mt. Adams had changed significantly. Fewer families were living on the Hill, and the catholic population decreased significantly. Today, one parish, combined as Holy Cross - Immaculata, serves about 250 families. We are asking for the support of the larger community to ensure that this sacred shrine will be a place where people come to pray for another hundred years!

We are raising funds to repair the HCI Parish Center

The north wall of Parish Center facing Pavilion Steet is pulling away from the building and must be secured. Replacement of the deteriorating box gutters is also necessary. Fr Barry received a bid to repair the building (wall and gutters) for $250K. With an available matching grant of $100,000, HCI parishioners and supporters must raise the remaining $150,000 to avoid withdrawing from our emergency reserve account.

This is a lot of money, but the Parish Center building is an important asset to our parish community, to our neighbors and to the Archdiocese, serving innumerable functions (as varied as meetings, receptions and yoga classes). The cost to demolish the building far exceeds the cost to repair it, not to mention the loss of an integral part of our community activities.

This campaign is an opportunity for us to come together as a community of faith and to demonstrate our commitment to the future of Holy Cross - Immaculata.
